UNIBEN STUDENTS URGED TO FIGHT CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA

Executive Director, Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), Reverend David Ugolor has charged Nigerian students to fight against corruption which has eaten deep into the country’s system.
He said this at a programme organised, recently, by the secretary of the Student Union Government (SUG), University of Benin, Emmanuel Ndueche, held at the university auditorium.
The programme tagged ‘FEDx UNIBEN’ has as its theme “Breaking from the Norm”.
The cleric said that everywhere in the world, the onus is now on the students to engage the politicians towards ensuring the proper implementation of the budget and advocate for their rights, but it is sadly not so in our clime.
He said the students had the potential to cause positive changes in the polity given the adequate knowledge needed.
He added that the pivotal role of the students and youth in making positive change possible is the reason why his NGO has decided to align with the students to tackle corruption in the country.
While giving the welcome address, the convener, Emmanuel said the aim of the event is to unveil the eyes of the students of the university to break from the normal routine of going to school, graduating with good grades, getting a good job and marry.
“We need to start using our God-given talents to effect positive change in our environment.”
Speaking on the steps to ensure you are significant, Pastor Benson Akhigbe, Founder, Living Your Dreams Initiative harped on the need to write down their value system and walk with it.
He said that it was the value system that determines the reason they do the things they do in life.
Also speaking at the event, a much respected musical icon, a professor and a sculptor, Sir Victor Uwaifo shared from his wealth of experience with the students. He spoke on the “concept of vocation”.
“You can explore all the talents in you and still be a success so long as it makes life worth living and fulfilling. The worst plan is better than no plan at all,” said Sir Uwaifo.
Winners of the William Obong Memorial Essay competition organised by the office of the Secretary General of the Student Union Government were given their prizes at the event.
