DPP 'not in bed' with his Eurobond critics
DIRECTOR of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko yesterday said he has "not gone to bed with anyone" regarding the Sh250 billion Eurobond scandal.
The DPP has poked holes in the EACC report that cleared government officials in the handling of the Eurobond proceeds.
Speaking when he appeared before the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee, Tobiko admitted to facing indirect pressure from the political class.
“Pressure is mounting regarding decisions I arrive at,” the DPP told the Nicholas Gumbo-led committee.
"As to whether I have gone to bed with anyone, no I haven’t."
He cited recent ultimatums by Cord leader Raila Odinga to name Eurobond beneficiaries.
Tobiko also mentioned some Jubilee MPs including Kieni's Kanini Kega, who accused him of having been compromised.
He cited ultimatums "that I provide the names of the Eurobond thieves within three days and stop playing with minds of Kenyans”.
"Whether that is pressure or not, no direct interference can be brought to bear," Tobiko said.
He said he has never received a telephone call from anyone directing him on how he should decide about a certain case.
“We don’t fear repercussions from anyone. We apply the law across the board irrespective of anyone,” Tobiko said.
He warned of antics by powerful corruption cartels who, upon prosecution in lower courts, move to higher courts and obtain stay orders.
Charging people without seeing results is what undermines confidence in the justice system, Tobiko said.
These are tactics to delay justice, he said.
Tobiko said six months since President Uhuru Kenyatta released the list of shame, 300 persons have been charged.
This is the greatest number of individuals charged in the shortest time, he said.
