TEAM Nigeria has now shot up to 10th in the Paralympic Games medals table with six gold two silver and one bronze medals after further outstanding performances in weightlifting yesterday.
As of yesterday morning, Nigeria was placed 12th in the medals table with four gold two silver and one bronze medals after picking up three more medals yesterday in powerlifting and athletics. However the last 24 hours, Team Nigeria has become the leading African contingent at the games with three athletes winning three more gold medals in the powerlifting and shotput.
Ndidi Nwosu competing in the 73kg of the powerlifting event outclassed her opponents with a lift of 140kg to win gold ahead of Souhad Ghazuoani from France who also lifted 140kg but settled for the silver and Egypt’s Amany Ali who lifted 17kg to get the bronze. Bose Omolayo then became the 79kg category champion with a lift of 138kg, beating China’s Lili Xu and Taipei’s Tzu-Hui Lin to the silver and bronze respectively.
In track and field, Lauretta Onye threw 8.40m to set a new world Paralympic shotput record. With the three gold won yesterday, Nigeria sits atop the African countries with a total of 10 medals, while Tunisia is now second with 10 medals.
South Africa has eight medals, while Algeria nine medals and Egypt has seven medals. China maintained her lead on the overall medals table with 41gold, 33 silver and 24 bronze medals while Britain with 24 gold is second and Ukraine is third with 19 gold medals and the US remains fourth with 13 gold medals.
